Dundee Korfball Club are offering four weeks of FREE beginners sessions at the Ardler Complex (Turnberry Avenue, Dundee, DD2 3TP) on Thursdays, September 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2023.
Classes will run from 6:30 to 8:00pm and are intended to introduce complete newcomers to the sport. All four sessions are free, and attendance can be at one or all of the sessions. No previous knowledge is needed.
Korfball is a fun sport for men and women and Dundee offer a great balance for both those who wish to be competitive and those who are looking for something social to keep fit.
This will be v10.0 of Dundee Day and, as usual, it will be a one day event, open to teams from anywhere… teams from existing clubs, cobbled together teams of friends, and maybe even a few cobbled together teams of people who’ve never played together before too. As long as people show enough interest, there will be separate sections for adults, juniors (U16) and kids (U12, monokorf).
Anyone who’s interested in either entering a team, or just coming along and playing for a scratch team, should get in touch with the club by email (korfballdundee@gmail.com) or check out our Facebook event for more details.
Similarly, anyone who is willing to help us run the event (we will need lots of helpers) should make themselves known as soon as possible. You don’t even need to like korfball to be a good helper – a band of volunteers to staff the day-long BBQ and blow the full-time horn would be particularly useful. 😉
* As in previous years, Dundee Day is being scheduled for “the day after” St. Andrews’ magnificent beach tournament, so we are hoping that quite a few of the beach teams (one beach team = 2 boys + 2 girls) will hang around and pair up to form full teams (4 boys + 4 girls) on Dundee Day. You should contact Saints directly (korfball@st-andrews.ac.uk) if you want to enter the Beach Tournament on the Saturday.

DKC have just completed their first charitable “10,000” club challenge. The idea was to keep everyone fit, motivated and connected in the absence of korfball training sessions and matches, and to raise some money for the Eagles Wings Trust in Dundee.
The challenge started on 1st May and was timed to finish on the day that would have been our 9th Dundee Day summer tournament, Sunday 24th May.
The challenge was to complete 1000 km running, 1000 km walking, 1000 km cycling, 1000 minutes planking, 1000 each of crunches, press ups, squats, lunges and step ups, and score 1000 goals (a few members managed to set up korfball posts at home, or used a basketball hoop instead). Participants submitted their activity each day via an on-line form so we could see how much progress we were making.
We got through several of the exercises quite quickly, so these were replaced with additional challenges of Russian twists, burpees, squat jumps, reverse lunges and box jumps; we ended up completing 13,268 of these in total. The 1000 minutes planking turned out to be more difficult to achieve, we finally got there two days before the deadline with the help of some group planking sessions via Zoom!
The goal scorers did an amazing job – the original target of 1000 goals turned out to be far too easy; it was optimistically raised to 10,000 a few days before the end and this was achieved on the final day: a grand total of 10,588 goals were scored.
We also completed 1060 km walking and an impressive 1740 km cycling with little difficulty, but found the target of 1000 km running more challenging. On the final weekend a brilliant team effort of individual runners (battling the strong winds) got us the remaining 115 km that we needed with three hours to spare. It was a great achievement to complete the club challenge and it certainly provided extra motivation for exercising in new and different ways until we can play korfball again.
As a result of everyone’s generous donations, the challenge raised £865 for the Eagles Wings Trust, which helps people who are homeless, addicted or in the process of recovery.
Dundee Korfball Club will be running a FREE four week course for beginners at the Ardler Complex on Thursdays, August 18, 25, September 1 and 8. Junior classes will run from 5:30-6:30pm, and adults from 6:30-8:00pm. Everyone welcome…
The first team has had their first games played last week-end against Northern Storm and St.Andrews. With the last few weeks the change of training style had good hopes against Storm as we still have to beat them. Both teams played a furious game and the ball was travelling fast between sprinting players. Alas the shots at the korf where going in on the opponents side but Dundee lacked any goals when they went into half time.
Northern Storm was leading the game with 5-0, not the score we where looking for. After a pep talk and some rest the team took position on the court again and started to find their target. With 2 goals in quick succession the first points where on the board, and the third was not far behind.
Storm came back with Kyle scoring their sixth goal, followed by Nigel to make it 4 – 6. Storm came back again to 4 – 7. Paul scored to make it 5-7, Storm misses a penalty and Nigel scored another to get it to 6 – 7, just in time as the final whistle went.
A good fight but unfortunately not enough, who knows what would have happened if we managed to score the 3 penalties we had. But that is if.. and did not happen.
After a brake when Storm played St.Andrews (score was low, I think 4-3 to St.Andrews Oops, score was 4 all.) DKC1 was on again this time against St.Andrews. This time they did not hang around, in the first attack they scored their first goal (Paul). A penalty taken by Blair found it’s way this time and the score is 2 -0.
St.Andrews was given a penalty and scored to make it 2 – 1, but DKC did not wait long to take it back by David and Paul running in to make it 4- 1.
Again we see St.Andrews scoring to be followed by Mary and David to widen the gap to 6-2. St.Andrews distance shot took one back, followed by a nice running in from Carla. As soon as the ball was back in our attack David scored another. The score at half time was 8 – 3, that’s better than lagging behind 5-0.
St.Andrews started well as they scored first, but Carla scored twice to make it 10 – 4. It started to become a bit of a habit, St.Andrews scores, we score back. David scored, and they took their eyes of Carla. She was free under the post, ball went straight to her and in 12-5.
Towards the end St.Andrews tried hard and managed to score some more before we got some in as well. The final score was a great 14 – 9 win, well done team.
The club will be holding a number of outdoor training sessions over the summer, bringing korfball to different parts of Dundee. The sessions will be informal, and are a great opportunity to try the sport out in a no-pressure environment.
All sessions will be from 1330 – 1500.
13th July – Magdalen Green
27th July – Baxter Park
3rd August – Balgay Park
10th August – Broughty Ferry Beach
If you have any questions the please e-mail us at dundee@korfball.org.uk. We recommend you contact us before coming, as all sessions are subject to change (especially with the weather).
Last Saturday there was a tournement to celebrate the birthday of Nigel Cooper. He had his birthday during our training session and realised Saterday afternoon why he was completely ignored and no-one congratulated him. This was all forgotten when he entered the hall at the Grove Academy where he was greeted by almost the full team and a team from Glagow to held a mini tournement in his honour. The day was followed by a drink and a meal at the Indian where he received a birthday cake in the shape of a (korf)ball.
Nigel, Congratulations…
